JJ Redick on Anthony Davis: 'We're going to empower him as much as he wants to be empowered'

JJ Redick: “We’re going to empower him (Anthony Davis) as much as he wants to be empowered. I mean, if he wants to be first-team All-NBA and he wants to be in the MVP conversation all year long, we’re going to empower him to do that. Same goes for LeBron—we’ll give him the freedom to be a playmaker and scorer, but within a system that allows other guys to thrive too. It’s about maximizing these players within a structure.”

More on this storyline

Incoming coach J.B. Bickerstaff is familiar with Duren’s game from his time as coach of division rival Cleveland. At his July introductory press conference, Bickerstaff talked of how the ability of Duren and teammate Isaiah Stewart to switch indiscriminately on defense troubled the Cavaliers. Bickerstaff can point to the development of Jarrett Allen, Cleveland’s seven-year veteran, and use his experience coaching him to hasten Duren’s grasp of the complexities of the tasks he’ll be assigned. There is plenty to work with. Duren is already an elite rebounder. He finished fifth in rebounding last season at 11.6 per game behind Domantas Sabonis, Rudy Gobert, Anthony Davis and Nikola Jokic. Among players who averaged at least 20 minutes per game, Duren was second in rebound percentage (19.4) to Jusuf Nurkic and second to Sabonis in defensive rebound percentage (28.5). Don’t underestimate rebounding as a key component of defense. -via NBA.com / September 18, 2024
Redick is not concerned about his two stars though despite their Olympic runs, as he explained on Spectrum’s Lakeshow Podcast: “I mean, look, those guys are professionals in every sense of the word. My concern for them about whether or not they’ll be ready to play on Oct. 22 and be in shape, I don’t have that concern. We’re gonna work with Mike and Ish making sure that they feel that they’re in a great place to start the regular season. They’ll certainly be involved in training camp and the preseason here in September as well as preseason games.” -via Lakers Nation / September 8, 2024
Q. How much did you enjoy their Olympic run and what happens when training camp starts? I assume they get a little easing in of things to come. JJ Redick: Yeah I mean, look, those guys are professionals in every sense of the word. My concern for them about whether or not they’ll be ready to play on October 22 and be in shape, I don’t have that concern. We’re gonna work with Mike and Ish making sure that they feel that they’re in a great place to start the regular season. They’ll certainly be involved in training camp and the preseason here in September as well as preseason games. -via YouTube / September 8, 2024
Dan Woike: JJ Redick said D’Angelo Russell is probably the player he spoke to the most this summer. Said they’ve talked about putting him in a position to having a “career year.” Praised DLo’s energy and mindset. Said DLo is in a great place heading into camp. -via Twitter @DanWoikeSports / September 25, 2024
Dave McMenamin: JJ Redick says he and his coaching staff have discussed the moment that LeBron James and Bronny James will shared the court in the regular season, making NBA history. But they haven’t made any plans. JJ says he will involve father and son in the planning process. -via Twitter @mcten / September 25, 2024
