Davis’ instincts also tell him that his value was overlooked when he was not selected as one of the three nominees for Defensive Player of the Year. “I’ll never get it,” Davis told ESPN when asked about the award. “They’re not giving it to me. The league doesn’t like me. I’m the best defensive player in the league. I can switch 1 through 5. I can guard the pick-and-roll the best in the league, from a big standpoint. I block shots. I rebound.

Think the first half of ORL-CLE is the best Evan Mobley has ever played? Just kinda point blank? Looked like the AD clone that everyone has wanted him to be for years. Punished switches. Handled switches himself on D. Protected rim. Made two 3s. Basically perfect half. – 2:35 AM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
Anthony Davis: “We can’t be bad at both defensive rebounding and transition (defense).“
Lakers lost the offensive glass battle 15-6, and the transition battle 21-14.
Denver took great care of the ball (6 TO’s) to help the transition difference. – 11:50 PM
Chris Palmer @ChrisPalmerNBA
Not what Lakers fans wanted. On the plus side AD was spectacular. He’s only the second Laker in history with at least 32 pts, 14 rebs, 5 asts, 4 blks in a playoff game. Kareem is the other 44 years ago. – 11:09 PM

The Lakers were up 12 midway through the 2nd Q until DEN took over. Nuggets win Game 1, 114-103, led by Jokic’s 32p 12r 7a. AD 32p 14r 5a 4b; LeBron 27p 8a 7tos; Reaves 13p on 5-of-9 4r 3a; DLo 13p on 6-of-20 (1-of-9 3s); Prince 11p on 4-of-7 4r. – 10:59 PM
Khobi Price @khobi_price
Final: Nuggets 114, Lakers 103.
LAL drops Game 1 of the first-round series. Anthony Davis: 32 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, four blocks. LeBron James: 27 points, eight assists, six rebounds. Nikola Jokic: 32 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists. – 10:59 PM

Final: Nuggets 114, Lakers 103
Denver takes Game 1. They’ve won nine straight games over LA. AD had 32 points and 14 rebounds. LeBron had 27/6/8. DLo (6-20 FGs) once again looks unplayable against Denver. Nikola Jokic had 32/12/7. Murray had 22/6/10.
Up next: Game 2 on Monday. – 10:57 PM
Nick Wright @getnickwright
Really fun Game 1. Jokic & AD were both great.
When Denver went on their 3rd quarter run, the Lakers panicked and just stopped running offense & started bombing 3s, and that was the difference.
Should be an awesome series. – 10:55 PM
Ryan Ward @RyanWardLA
Nice block from AD on Jokic! – 10:46 PM
Ryan Blackburn @NBABlackburn
Anthony Davis has mostly played GREAT tonight too. He’s making shots here over Joker. – 10:44 PM
Nate Duncan @NateDuncanNBA
LeBron on Jokic now. He overplayed him and blew up the Nuggets’ play, and AD was lurking behind to prevent a lob over the top. Led to what Lakers want, a Gordon 3 that missed. – 10:39 PM
Allen Sliwa @AllenSliwa
Bad shot after bad shot, what is the Offense? AD is being guarded by DeAndre Jordan and touched the ball once. Reaves only looks to shoot when he’s 27ft away from the basket. Darvin, draw up a play – 10:33 PM
Nate Duncan @NateDuncanNBA
AD had a couple nice plays getting back in transition D, but after yet another missed 3 he jogged back and Braun was able to go right through DLo to push it to 15 – 10:31 PM

Third quarter: Nuggets 89, Lakers 78
A poor second half of the quarter has LA down 11 entering the fourth. LeBron has 23 points and 7 assists. AD has 22 points and 8 rebounds. Nikola Jokic has 23 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Denver has doubled LA in 3s (12 vs. 6). – 10:24 PM

At the half: Lakers 60, Nuggets 57
Near perfect half for LeBron and Anthony Davis and Denver fights back to make it tighter.
Jokic has 15 pts. MPJ up to 11 pts after a slow-start and Murray has 7 assists.
If you’re Malone, what’s your message to the team? – 9:46 PM
Mike Prada @MikePradaNBA
LeBron and AD having that half and only being up 3 seems like a bad omen, especially considering the latter is on pace to play 45 minutes less than a week after experiencing back pain. – 9:46 PM
Dave McMenamin @mcten
After LAL led by as many as 12, DEN stormed back and Ball Arena is rocking. We go into the half with the Lakers up 60-57, with LeBron hitting a deep 3 just before the buzzer. LeBron 19p on 7-of-10 5a 3r; AD on 7-of-11 18p 7r 4a. For the Nuggets: Jokic 15p on 7-of-10 6r; MPJ 11p – 9:45 PM
Jovan Buha @jovanbuha
Halftime: Lakers 60, Nuggets 57
Denver outscored LA 32-27 in the second. LA’s turnovers, transition defense and defensive rebounding let Denver back into the game. LeBron has 19 points and 5 assists. AD has 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. DLo was just 1-of-6 in the quarter. – 9:45 PM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
A 4-0 LAL run out of a time out has them up 49-37.
Davis scored on a pretty move, before LeBron picked up a loose ball after a bad pass from Jackson and converted a fast break layup.
LeBron is 5 of 7, and AD 6 of 8, for 30 of LAL’s 49 points.
LAL shooting 61.3%. – 9:33 PM
Jovan Buha @jovanbuha
LA up 49-37 w/ 6:05 left in the first half. AD (16 points on 6-8 FGs) and LeBron (14 points on 5-7 FGs) are outplaying Nikola Jokic (11 points on 5-8 FGs) and Jamal Murray (8 points on 3-7 FGs). LA is shooting 61.3%. Denver is shooting 37.8%. LA is dominating paint points 30-20. – 9:32 PM
Ryan Blackburn @NBABlackburn
One thing that I didn’t really expect was for the Lakers to stagger Anthony Davis in the non-Jokic minutes. They got away with it at the end of the first quarter because the Nuggets had four bench guys around Joker.
Pretty interesting chess match so far. – 9:30 PM
Khobi Price @khobi_price
Anthony Davis has 8 of the Lakers’ 10 points. Lakers have made an effort to give Davis a runway to the rim with DeAndre Jordan guarding him.
AD with a team-best 14 points so far. Gordon and Jokic just subbed back in; Lakers 45-35. – 9:25 PM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
Anthony Davis is 5 for 7 from the field, including 2 made jumpers and a leaner, plus 4 for 4 at the FT line for a game-high 14 points as LAL lead 45-35.
LeBron and Jokic both return (LAL were +2 in the minutes they both sat) at the 7:37 mark. – 9:24 PM
Kamenetzky Brothers @KamBrothers
First curveball from Darvin. The second quarter begins with LeBron on the bench, and AD on the floor with D’Lo, Vincent, Prince and Jaxson Hayes. Hayes, by the way, picked up two fouls by the time I finished this tweet. AK – 9:19 PM
Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
LeBron typically leads the 2nd Q unit that’s been strong lately. Tonight, AD sat for the last 2 min. of the 1st Q, but returns to start the 2nd Q alongside Vincent, Russell, Prince and Hayes.
Russell/Prince missed 3’s on first trip, and Murray hit his to bring DEN within 5. – 9:15 PM

LA opening the second quarter with AD, Jaxson Hayes, TP, Gabe Vincent and DLo. – 9:15 PM

First quarter: Lakers 33, Nuggets 25
An impressive quarter from LA. That’s as comfortable as they’ve looked offensively against Denver. LeBron has 12 points and 5 assists. DLo and AD each have 6 points. LA is shooting 61.9%. Nikola Jokic has 11 points (5-8 FGs). – 9:14 PM

Aaron Gordon picked up his 2nd PF as Anthony Davis grabbed an offensive board, leading to LeBron’s 3 that put LAL up 13-8.

13 minutes and 6 seconds.
That’s how many minutes Nikola Jokic has played WITHOUT Anthony Davis on the floor the last 7 games against the Lakers, including the playoffs.
LA will match Davis’ minutes to Jokic. That’s an advantage the Nuggets must exploit.

More on this storyline

Mike Trudell: Anthony Davis cited “Early turnovers, poor shooting to start the 3rd” and Denver’s offensive rebounding as key factors in the loss. Davis was terrific individually in Game 1: 32 points, 14 boards, 5 assists, 4 blocks. -via Twitter @LakersReporter / April 21, 2024
