Among the reasons why the Lakers are not Fox’s preferred destination: Klutch has direct knowledge of many Lakers dealings thanks to its representation of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Which means Klutch knows, as sources tell The Stein Line, that the Lakers have zero intention of parting with Sacramento’s presumed top target in any Fox discussions: Austin Reaves.

I guess the San Antonio Spurs don’t even need De’Aaron Fox by the way some of y’all are talking about Stephon Castle & the Spurs not being willing to trade him.

More on this storyline
Three years later? It’s the Kings, according to the league sources, who first approached De’Aaron Fox’s Klutch Sports representation about putting the All-Star guard on the trade market with immediate effect. Sacramento sent word to some interested teams as early as last week that it was open to such overtures. That’s the flipped switch in Sactown. Yet this impending breakup, to be clear, was inspired by Fox’s wavering commitment to the only franchise he’s ever known. He hasn’t formally requested to be traded, true, but he also has been unwilling to commit his long-term future to the Kings. -via marcstein.substack.com / January 30, 2025
The initial framing, back in July, was that De’Aaron Fox had merely taken a calculated financial gamble by holding off an extension. It was common knowledge that he would have access to even greater riches in 2025 if he could earn All-NBA honors and make himself eligible for a supermax extension worth more $300 million. Yet now we’re being told that Fox has no intention of extending in Sacramento … regardless of the outcome of this season. Perhaps earning that All-NBA selection could have changed that stance, but that certainly doesn’t seem likely at the moment. -via marcstein.substack.com / January 30, 2025
League sources say De’Aaron Fox and his representation would have preferred to reach this point during the offseason, when teams around the league gain access to 2032 draft capital and carry additional roster spots. The offseason generally offers greater flexibility across the board for trades. The Brooklyn Nets, for example, are one team that would be expected to pursue Fox in the offseason but are not regarded as an in-season Fox suitor. But make no mistake: Fox’s original decision to decline a three-year, $167 million extension last summer is what got this rolling towards a potential breakup A possible breakup, yes, even before next week’s trade deadline. -via marcstein.substack.com / January 30, 2025
Austin Reaves: But, you know, being around Russ for—I think it was a year and a half—he’s an unbelievable teammate, an unbelievable guy. Yeah, great. I mean, so genuine. During COVID, my rookie year in Minnesota, I was stuck, and he texted me two or three times in the three days I was there, asking if I needed anything. So, to see a guy like that go be successful and be an engine of that team is very cool to see. -via YouTube / January 30, 2025
“The talk is really contagious and I think the toughness. That’s what I was like really getting at a few weeks ago when I talked about the leadership component. Yeah. We all are leaders,” Redick said. … “Max Christie, just because you’re 21 doesn’t mean you can’t lead in some way. And that to me is like Dorian leading. His version of leading looks different than [Austin Reaves’] version of leading, [which] looks different than LeBron’s version of leading. And I think the biggest thing is … this isn’t shade at anyone else. It’s not shade at anyone else in the NBA. But Doe is comfortable with who he is — like the player, the person. And in my experience… people that are like that, people gravitate towards that. People want to follow that. That’s what Doe is.” James said Finney-Smith is “exactly what we needed.” Reaves said that the veteran has been nothing but “fantastic.” -via Los Angeles Times / January 27, 2025
Mike Trudell: Austin Reaves said he’s been very impressed with Dorian Finney-Smith: “His energy, his personality – you could tell from the day he got in the locker room he was a win-first guy.” Then he cited how DFS plays the right way, brings multiple skills on the court. -via Twitter @LakersReporter / January 26, 2025
