On the morning of January 7, Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison invited Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka to the Ascension Coffee in the lobby of the Hotel Crescent Court, just a half-mile from American Airlines Arena, to begin a similarly arduous, delicate trade conversation that would jolt the rest of the NBA.
